Domain Registration – Choosing A Website Name

When setting up a new business, one of the first things on your to-do list is choosing and buying your website address, also known as your domain name. There is a lot of competing advice out there and many factors in play, especially when you are looking to do a cheap domain registration.

Some of the advices are good for you, but others are terrible for your business brand. The market is highly saturated, and many of the best names are already taken. Therefore, choosing a perfect domain can be a bit of a challenging task. It would be best to have a checklist of what you are to go for and what to avoid when you are looking for the best website name.

How to choose a website name that your customers can remember

When choosing a domain name that your customers can remember, type in without any trouble, and increase your search visibility. Having the best word combination for your website name is essential for the success of your website and business at large. Below is a checklist that will help you make the right choice for your website name.

Short and memorable

The longer and more complicated your domain name is, the higher chances for people getting it wrong when sharing and typing it in. Keep your website name as short as possible without making it too short and altering your branding potential.

Dotcom or dot anything else

Most of the domain names you might want are already taken in the dot com version. So people start thinking otherwise, for example, .net and .luxury, which might be available.

Many other domain extensions are popping up, and you can be spoilt for choices. For example, you may opt for a unique domain name like .beer or .cassie, which are certainly specific; however, they are not recommended because .com has previously dominated the domain name market. So, many people have an inbuild association with the .com web extension.

When you choose a unique web extension such as .net, it is essential to emphasize to your customers that the domain name ends with .net and not .com. Failure to emphasize will make your customer issue or type the wrong domain name. The .net and .co options should be the last option after slightly twisting the .com domain name and failing to fit.

Class and brand vs. keyword-based domain names

There are definite pros and cons for both options. Brand-based domain names may take the business’s name, while keyword-based domain names may take a specific keyword from other popular ones. The pure branded domain reads clean, easy to remember, and feels like a memorable brand. A keyword-based domain name is also a good idea because it rhymes with what people mostly search, making it highly ranked for that term.

Keyword-based domain names sound memorable but do not sound much like a brand. This can be significantly damaging for your click-through rate, depending on how terrible it is. Choosing a branded domain name might benefit your site more than a keyword-based domain name because it would be an exact match domain. Most importantly, your domain name should not necessarily be an exact match. Rather it should be a partial match domain. Also, combining a keyword and your brand name might be a good idea to create a good website name.

Ideally, getting a good domain name requires getting creative and getting something that works perfectly for you. If you want to get started and get the perfect domain name to get you going, you need to follow the right steps to get you going.
